Why I Love Cycling
I’ve been an enthusiast in cycling since I was a kid. I loved cycling in the neighborhood, just to sight-see and have some fun. As I grew up, I realized that I had an obsession of cycling. By then, I had my own camera and while cycling, I would take picture of beautiful landscapes or anything fascinating which I came across. There are also countless times when I participated in various cycling competitions, though I have never won any award.
But what does it mean to be a cyclist? What made me love the bike to the extent that even today I usually go to work riding a bike? There are many factors which made me love cycling for life. Among them, is the experience of having the best view of places that you visit. You can easily capture some magnificent views when you are riding a bike, than when in a train or a car.
Benefits of Riding a Bike
Moreover, cycling is one of the most effective ways of a good workout. Through biking, a person is more likely to lose excess calories which is healthier in your life today. There is need to understand that that in almost every nation in the world, lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes etc., have affected a large population of people.
We are therefore advised each day by various organizations to participate fitness programs like Weight Watchers, which will help burn the excess calories in our bodies for good. Personally, since I’m involved in a job where I have to sit behind the desk on a computer each day, I usually find it relieving in the evenings where I cycle back home.
That is not all. Since I was a student, I was involved in various projects which advocated for sustainability of the environment. Unlike cars and other means of transport which emit toxic gases to the environment, bikes and walking do not. The ride is smooth and environmental friendly. Therefore since I was a student, I found it practical to use my bike as a means of transport as opposed to taking a bus.
However, the ride isn’t usually smooth. Bikers face many problems while on the road. That was my case two years ago, while I was riding to work one morning. Of course, living in the city means that each worker has to strife to rush to work in the morning. This may induce some motorist to speeds as they rush to work. As it is commonly known, there are many motorists who have less regard for bikers. Cyclists are at times seen as nuisance people on the road.
Risks that Cyclist face while on the Road
That morning, as I was riding to work, I was involved in a grisly road accident which almost got me killed. The collision happened when a speeding motorist ran on me as I was riding. I passed out and I was in coma for three days. When I woke up, I realized that my left hand and my right foot had been badly fractured. I also had been hit on the head severely, that I thought that I wouldn’t survive the ordeal.
I was in hospital for about three weeks before I was discharged. While there, I even vowed that I would never ride a bike again. And actually that was the case even after I got well. I decided that I would be taking a bus or catching a train on my way to work.
However, all that was short-lived when I decided to take part in a cycling event which was meant to create awareness on the need of motorists to adhere to traffic rules in an effort to make it safe for cycling. When I heard about the peaceful cycling protest, I knew that this was the best opportunity to make my voice heard. I had been a victim before and the cycling event meant so much for me.
That was the day that I rode a new bike again after about 8 months of using other means of transport. That day, I realized how much I had missed cycling and before I knew it, I was back into my old days of cycling to work and when going to other places.
